Ingredients

  • 1 block Extra-firm tofu pressed for 20 minutes and cut into ½-inch thick slices
  • 3 tbsp Soy sauce or tamari
  • 1.5 tbsp Toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp Rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp Garlic-chili paste (or sriracha)
  • 1 tsp Fresh ginger grated
  • 2 Garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tbsp Toasted sesame seeds for garnish
  • 2 tbsp Chopped scallions for garnish
  • 1 tbsp Cooking oil for greasing grill or pan

Method

  1. In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, maple syrup, garlic-chili paste, grated ginger, and minced garlic to make the marinade.
  2. Place tofu slices in a shallow dish and pour marinade over them. Flip to coat all sides. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes (up to 8 hours).
  3. Preheat grill or grill pan over medium-high heat and lightly oil the surface to prevent sticking.
  4. Remove tofu from marinade, letting excess drip off. Reserve remaining marinade for basting.
  5. Grill tofu for 3–4 minutes on each side until charred and crispy, basting with reserved marinade as it cooks.
  6. Remove tofu from grill, sprinkle with sesame seeds and scallions, and serve hot.

Notes

• Serve with rice, noodles, or in wraps.
• Add a splash of lime for extra brightness.
